THE RULE
ILLUSTRATING WITH GIANLUCA GAROFALO APRIL 17 TO APRIL 19, 2015
WORKSHOP
THE TEACHER
Illustrator
Born in 1968, at the age of 23 he enrolled at the architecture faculty in Rome while, at the same time, studying to become a professional illustrator...
Every narration needs a “plausibility element” in order to be perceived as possible or even real.
Specificities created by the narrator, which are coherent with each other, are the ones that in this fictional narrative act as connotations that belong to a functioning and possible system.
They are physical, morphological, dynamical, perspective, atmospherical, geometrical, anatomical, chromatic rules, means we can use to become creators and communicators of our own personal fictional universe and to make it plausible, even if not likely real. All these rules need to make real the improbable.
All these things are the rule.
During this workshop students will be able to create their own rule.
Illustrations will be based on students’personal texts or book projects. If they don’t have one, they can use as reference pre-existing texts or books.
As exercises, students will do a small sketchbook of preparatory drafts and two finished illustrations.
The required tools are watercolors (for students who use that technique), acrylic, graphite, colors, collage, digital materials. The technique used is not important, what is important is the fact that all students should feel comfortable with their own style and method. It is also useful a small sketchbook where participants could draw and study the world they are going to illustrate.
