Nathan Fowkes is a veteran entertainment industry artist with credits on 11 feature films including: The Prince of Egypt, Spirit, several projects within the Shrek Universe, How to Train Your Dragon, The Legend of Puss in Boots, RIO2 and an upcoming project from Disney...

This 3 day intensive workshop will show entertainment artists and students how to powerfully engage their audience through visual storytelling and design. The presentation will be a serious exploration of using color, light and design to create compelling concept art and design extraordinary places.

PROGRAM

DAY 1: CREATING COMPELLING CONCEPT ART THROUGH THE DESIGN OF COLOR AND LIGHT

  • The theatrical design and development process

  • Organizing the complexities of color into engaging harmonies

  • Choosing color schemes that create a full variety of moods and emotional beats for storytelling

  • The technical nature of color; what we need know to make our audience believe

  • Color scripting to create a compelling narrative

  • Staging images through the design of light

  • Photoshop demo: building an image with color and light

DAY 2: ENVIRONMENT DESIGN - THE CREATION OF EXTRAORDINARY PLACES

  • The design and development process for production environments

  • The creation of mood, history and story through environment and location design

  • Creating emotional cues through the design of shape and line

  • Purposeful architecture design for storytelling

  • Designing 3D space in landscape and architecture

  • Photoshop demo: building an environment

DAY 3: FINDING INSPIRATION FOR CONCEPT ART PAINTING AND DESIGN THROUGH THE STUDY OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

  • Improving your concept art painting and design through observation of nature

  • Step by step demo slides for on location traditional and digital landscape sketching

  • Slideshow on the benefits of sketching from life in watercolor and gouache as a quick-sketch medium

DAY 3 BONUS: PICTORIAL COMPOSITION FOR DYNAMIC CONCEPT ART

  • The fundamentals of effective picture making through composition and design

  • How to find artistry and a clear read within challenging and complicated subject matter
