Michael Hampton is an artist and long-time educator in the fields of figure drawing, anatomy, and two- dimensional design...

Fundamental to creature/character design is an understanding of biology and anatomy. This knowledge allows for a fictional creature/character to feel familiar by filtering in enough “real-life” believability to connect with an audience.


This workshop will cover the skeleton structure, design, and anatomy of the 4 key species (dog, cat, horse, cow) in order to establish an anatomical design language for use in developing that which does not exist. This workshop has the dual emphasis of teaching animal drawing and providing foundational information to aspiring creature designers.

PROGRAM

DAY 1: GESTURE AND SKELETON

  • Establishing a workflow or process

  • Understanding form vs. function in the skeletal structure of carnivores and herbivores

  • Developing Volume through landmarks

  • Head and Skull Construction

DAY 2: ANATOMY

  • Function and Design of the anatomy in the torso (cat vs. horse)

  • Anatomy of the Arms and comparison to birds/wings

  • Anatomy of the Legs (dog vs. cow)

DAY 3: ANATOMY AND DESIGN

  • Anatomy of the Legs (dog vs. cow)

  • Comparative study of the hands and feet (human, cat, horse)

  • Comparative anatomy of the face and mouth (primate, cat, horse, human)

Course language: English
Required tools: Laptop and graphic tablet, paper and pencil
Required knowledge: Basic knowledge of photoshop or equivalent, basic drawing skill
General requirements: Basic drawing ability
Notes: An interpreting service will be available for a minimum of 5 requests
