ANATOMY WITH MICHAEL HAMPTON JULY 24 - 26, 2015

WORKSHOP

ANATOMY FOR VIDEOGAMES AND ANIMATION

THE TEACHER

Figure drawing and anatomy educator - Anatomy Tools, Lucas Arts

Michael Hampton is an artist and long-time educator in the fields of figure drawing, anatomy, and two- dimensional design...

The upcoming workshop for Artistic Anatomy and Construction is aimed at character and creature designers who want to learn how to create spectacular characters and creatures while retaining believability.  The scope of the workshop is to teach a simple but comprehensive method to understand and use anatomic proportions, this method will allow students to invent without constrains exactly as it happens in international studios like PIXAR, Dreamworks and Blizzard.

The lessons will focus on providing a basic overview to the skeletal proportions/construction and anatomical design of the figure, with a special emphasis on areas of transition (neck, elbow, waist, etc.).

During the three-day overview, special importance will be placed on creating visual patterns from anatomical groups. By reducing complex muscle and skeletal designs to basic patterns, attention is more easily focused on how poses/actions may be communicated, designed, and formed.

PROGRAM

DAY 1

  • Will include a lecture on gesture, an overview of the skeleton, the basic skeletal planes/geometries, as well as an introduction to the large structures and design of the skull.

DAY 2

  • Will continue with the construction and design of the surface anatomy by placing special attention on the large anatomical groups and areas of transition. The neck, shoulders, elbow, and other more difficult areas will be discussed for their function and pattern. .

DAY 3

  • Will conclude the anatomical overview with a lecture on the hands and feet. This day will also introduce the subject of comparative anatomy offering insights into the study and use of animals for creature/character design.
Workshop attendees will follow along with drawings, as the skeleton and muscles are broken down from sculptures, paintings, comics, etc., in an attempt to understand and clarify the anatomical structure of characters/figures. All notes, drawings, and PowerPoint files used will be available to participants at the workshop’s end for use as future reference.
