Jim Van der Keyl

Jim’s foundation is in classical hand-drawn animation, where clarity of posing, timing, spacing, and performance are paramount. In addition to his early Disney work, he contributed animation to Warner Brothers "The Iron Giant", "Eight Crazy Nights" and recently, "Looney Tunes", working within one of the most demanding traditions of character animation, where strong draftsmanship, comedic timing, and readable silhouettes are non-negotiable. This classical background continues to inform his approach to CG animation and teaching, emphasizing thinking like an animator, not just operating software. Beyond individual shot work, Jim has served in supervising roles, guiding animation teams and helping shape full productions. He supervised two feature-length animated films produced in Québec. Jim’s experience also includes work with some of the most respected visual-effects studios in the world, like DNEG, Framestore, MPC. Through DNEG, he contributed animation to Coyote vs. Acme. Alongside his studio career, Jim has spent 15+ years teaching and mentoring animators, particularly 3D animators transitioning from tools to true performance-based animation.
